This is a list of discussion questions was originally created for an Asian American community book club in 2022.

These discussion questions aim to help participants make meaning of the history they are reading about: inquiring how the history makes the reader feel, how it informs their own Asian American identity, and how it compares or contrasts to their own personal experiences.

By way of the heart: toward a holistic christian spirituality (1989)

This discussion guide was designed in 2019to lead a small group of people through 10 weeks of discussion and written with Asian Americans in mind, but is suitable for everyone.

Overarching themes include:

  • How do I have a view of God that is broader and more gracious?

  • How can I better integrate my faith with the many facets of my lived experience?

  • How can I move my understanding of God from being mostly intellectual to an understanding that better incorporates by whole being?

Mujerista Theology, Chapter 1: A Hispanic Garden in a Foreign Land (1996)

This is a discussion guide for the first chapter of the book Mujerista Theology, which is an essay entitled “A Hispanic Garden in a Foreign Land.”

It includes personal reflection questions based on themes discussed in the essay as well as 3 exercises that can be done individually or shared with a group. The guide was written in 2019 with an audience of women of color in mind.

Overarching themes include:

  • What do you do when you don’t feel like you belong anywhere?

  • How do I juggle being both a woman and a person of color?

  • How do I balance being true to myself while honoring the communities I belong to?
